After School Concession Stand
The After School Concession Stand Co-Chairs schedule SMS groups to operate our school concession stand located in the gym lobby. Each group arranges its own volunteers and is able to retain the profits generated by its shift! The Co-Chairs handle all financial accounting and inventory. If you want to get to know the students and parents at Sutton, this is a great job for you! AND the Concession Stand now only sells its after-school customers healthy, kid-friendly snacks!

Art Liaison
Calling all parents of budding Piccassos! Developed as a new committee this year, this Chair assists our art teacher with field trips, arranging for student art displays in our community, support for after school Art Club, providing art news to SMS communications and anything else you like to dream up!

Band Liaison
Help blow Sutton’s horn with the SMS Band! The Chair meets regularly with our Band Director and Principal regarding upcoming band events and possible fundraising opportunities, provides Band news to SMS communications, assists with performance transportation arrangements if necessary.

Blues and Bar-B-Q
Blues and Bar-B-Q is Sutton’s first family-oriented PTA social each school year! The Co-Chairs coordinate all aspects of this good-old fashioned evening under the stars of Chastain Park. Delicious BBQ, awesome live blues and jazz; and a chance to mingle and meet new friends all help SMS kick off the school year in style!

Book Fair
The Book Fair is a great fundraiser for the SMS Media Center. We have a designated week at the Barnes and Noble at the Peach in December where we get a percentage of all money spent with a submitted Sutton voucher. This committee coordinates performances at the store, arranges publicity in the community and enlists volunteers to man the Sutton corner at B&N.

Buckhead Business Assoc Liaison
The BBA is a non-profit organization focused on the economic and cultural vitality of Atlanta’s Buckhead community. The BBA holds a meeting every Thursday morning at 7:30 at Anthony’s Restaurant on Piedmont Road. This Liaison has the opportunity to network with community members and increase Sutton’s presence in the community.

Calling Post
The Calling Post Chair is the voice of Sutton for late-breaking news! This position involves putting phone numbers into the school’s internet program and then recording phone messages based on timely information provided by the PTA Co-Presidents. Occasional updates to the master lists may occur. If you like to be the first to know, this is a great job for you!

Chastain Parking
Chastain Parking is Sutton’s major fundraising activity and a great way to meet and work with many of our Cougar families! The Co-Chairs oversee our school volunteers who collect the money and direct parking for concert-goers using our SMS parking lot. Duties include developing the volunteer schedule, working with the city police, training parking captains and their crews, and working with the volunteer in charge managing the money.

The Cougar Email Chair is our school’s point person to communicate SMS news and headlines on a very timely basis. You need a computer with internet access to maintain an active list of email addresses for our parents and staff. This Chair must be able to process and distribute information provided by PTA Co-Presidents on short notice.

Cultural Arts Liaison
The Cultural Arts Liaison consults with teachers and administration to bring outside performances to our students to supplement the SMS curriculum and provide exposure to new art forms! In this position, you will also provide cultural arts news to SMS communications.

Are you ready for your close-up in the role of SMS Drama Liaison? In this new position, you will work closely with our school Drama Director to coordinate our school’s involvement with stage performances and drama opportunities at North Atlanta, maintain a calendar of events and coordinate related hospitality needs, provide drama news to SMS communications and help start a chapter of the International Thespian Society right here at Sutton!

Dues and Donations
The Dues and Donations committee performs one of the most vital functions of our PTA! As a “Georgia PTA in Good Standing”, we have the goal of enrolling all our school’s families as members! The 8th Grade Dance celebrates the special friendships our students have formed in their middle school years at Sutton! The Chair is responsible for securing a venue, selecting an appropriate band or D. J., theme and menu. Parents, this is a great opportunity to get creative!

8th Grade Honors Day
The 8th Grade Honors Day is the culmination of each student’s experience at Sutton! This event is a collaborative effort between the PTA and school administration. The Chair is responsible for assisting the principal with special awards, sending invitations, identifying speakers and helping with parental notifications and communication.

Hispanic Liaison
Help bring news of our school’s events and opportunities to every Sutton home! Our Hispanic Liaison translates key information from the Tuxedo Telegraph and Free Press, communicates with parents about relevant social issues, plays a key role in events involving our Hispanic community including Orientation Days and Open House.

Honors Banquet
The Honors Banquet is an event that recognizes all students that have achieved the Honors Roll. The PTA’s involvement includes securing a venue for the event and working closely with the Administration implementing their requests up to and during the event.

Media Center Liaison
Are you a book lover? Just love to get between those shelves? Well, this committee is for you! This position works closely with the Media Specialist and will be a high profile position with the new media center at the entrance point of the new building. The sky is the limit to what this position can do. Want to coordinate volunteers in the library? Go for it! Want to work on fundraising for the media center? Take it on! Want to ensure that Sutton’s library is a gathering place for the community? Just do it. This is a great people person job!

Media Relations
The Media Relations Committee develops and implements a strategic media relations program to secure positive news coverage of SMS and increase our school’s visibility in the community. The Committee Chair works with the PTA Board to identify news opportunities, maintains a current media kit and is the primary media contact. Committee members work with the Chair in these efforts and at various school events at which there may be media presence.

Monthly Calendar
Calendar Coordinator requires limited computer knowledge, minimal time and you’ll never miss any SMS deadlines or events! A monthly check of the school Master Calendar in the main office to confirm activities, as well as monthly contact with our school’s PTA Co-Presidents, athletic directors and cultural arts chairs is your main responsibility. Update, copy and distribute this information each month in calendar format.

NAPPS Representative
The mission of North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools is to increase community awareness of and support for our North Atlanta cluster schools which features Sutton as the middle school link in a seamless kindergarten through 12th grade educational experience. The NAPPS representative attends monthly NAPPS meetings typically held in the format of a brown bag luncheon at our cluster’s neighborhood schools; actively advocates for North Atlanta High School; publicizes and supports NAPPS special events as needed.

Prospective Parent Tours give our community an opportunity to experience “life at Sutton” by visiting classrooms, talking with students and teachers, and participating in a roundtable discussion with our Principal. As a Tour Guide you have the forum to give our visitors first hand information about the many wonderful things happening at Sutton! Prepared materials developed for prospective parents offer additional insight.

Reflections
The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition program that provides children in PreK through 12 an opportunity to express themselves in any of 4 areas: literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts. Spearheading Sutton’s first entry into the contest will require Co-Chairs that can make the program unique for our own talented students! This committee’s duties include publicity, identifying entrants and judges, application submission, displaying art and recognizing achievements!

This is an opportunity to create an important tool used by all SMS parents on an almost daily basis! The Chair and committee work closely with the Homeroom Contacts in gathering, verifying and formatting the names, addresses, phone numbers and emails of students. The ability to secure advertising is important because it is the directory’s primary source of funding.

The Sutton Flea Market is a fun-filled one-day fundraiser for our school family and the surrounding community! The Co-Chairs coordinate all aspects of this “Open Market Bazaar” where Sutton families, school groups and outside vendors rent tables to sell a variety of wares in the school parking lot on a Saturday. Our Plant Sale is always a huge hit!

Sutton School Liaisons

North Atlanta Chair
This is a great job for a parent with students at both Sutton and NAHS who has a passion for strengthening the bond between these schools by passing along first hand information from administrations, PTAs, sports programs and other groups. This position is especially important over the next few years as these two schools work closely to implement the IB MYP and create a seamless transition from middle to high school.

Sutton Feeder School Liaison Chair

This Chair coordinates efforts of the liaison committee comprised of one representative from each of the six feeder schools whose focus is to promote SMS within their respective elementary schools. The Chair supports the committee by working closely with the PTA Board to develop a schedule of events and appropriate SMS materials and to coordinate intra-school efforts.

Feeder School Liaison
As a former or current parent at your SMS feeder school, you can use your contacts to coordinate such fun events as student visits between schools, fall parties for prospective parents, placement of SMS news in your school newsletter, Congratulations mailbox surprises for your school’s rising Sutton sixth graders, and summer events for our newest Cougars!

Teacher Appreciation
The Teacher Appreciation committee, provide refreshments the first Tuesday afternoon of each month for our principal’s faculty meeting. SMS parents also enjoy “appreciating” our fabulous faculty and staff at a Holiday Buffet, during Teacher Appreciation Week and at an end of the year celebration! They also acknowledge teacher and staff birthdays. This committee will also provide refreshments for “moving motivation” the week after the close of school this year as Sutton packs up to move “home”.

Teacher Grants
The Teacher Grant Chair co-ordinates grant applications from the teachers to the PTA. The Chair will sit down twice a month with the principal to determine which grants are feasible and then reports the progress to the Executive Board.

The Tuxedo Telegraph is a weekly source of headline news and information for Sutton parents. Being a co-editor of the Telegraph is a great way to get to know the SMS faculty and staff, and be among the first to know about any SMS news!

There are new parents flowing into Sutton all year long just looking for a way to get involved. This key position will require substantial time, creativity and good team-building skills as Sutton continues to develop its school website! Knowledge of different software packages, like Dream Weaver, is necessary. This committee will interface with many other SMS committees and needs to build a strong team to gather and process information for continuous web updates.

The Executive Board

Co-Presidents
The Co-Presidents direct the affairs of the PTA in cooperation with the Executive Board, Committee Chairs and PTA members; develop a year-long action plan; appoint standing chairs; coordinate volunteer efforts; serve as the primary link between the PTA and school Principal; conduct monthly meetings of the Executive Board, Board of Directors, PTA Coffee Talks and three General PTA membership meetings; weekly consultation with PTA communication vehicles; represent Sutton in the NAPPS organization, and work with APS on any issues of importance to Sutton Middle School.

Vice Presidents
Vice Presidents on the PTA Executive Board are directly involved with the operations of our PTA committees. The 2006-2007 Board will be comprised of at least two, and not more than four, Vice Presidents overseeing a wide range of responsibilities including communications, membership, fundraising, business partners, meeting programs, hospitality, volunteers, financial management.

Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for keeping accurate records of the proceedings of the association, Board of Directors and Executive Board meetings. These records will be the history of the PTA. The Secretary also maintains all correspondence with parents and the community in regards to donations of products and services provided to the school and PTA while maintaining an accurate record of membership rolls.

Treasurer
The Treasurer is the legally responsible, authorized custodian of the PTA funds. The Treasurer is responsible for the financial management of the PTA; receives and disburses all monies in accordance with the bylaws and the approved budget; is responsible for the bank account and all transactions; prepares monthly budget reports and presents reports at PTA meetings; and prepares reports for and files the annual tax return.
